Enchanting Pollino
Growing up in southeast Texas, I never had the chance to spend time in the mountains.
In fact, I saw my first mountains - the Swiss Alps, no less! - just 14 years ago on my first trip through Europe.
It was love at first sight, and although Calabria is famous for its beaches and seas, the mountains are my true love.
Our Table Tour, which features Calabrian cooking, food, wine and culture, starts in the enchanting Pollino Mountains just outside this fairy-tale village you see above.

They're baaaaaaack!
The famous Bronzi di Riace - larger-than-life 5th century BC bronze statues - have returned to their home at the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia in Reggio Calabria.

The holidays are behind us but like North America, the polar vortex has a grip on southern Italy. Ok - not really. But it is cold . We are staying warm with homemade Italian soups, such as my all-time favorite tortellini con spinaci and by indulging in Italy's thick, almost pudding-like ciocolato caldo. Travel Tidbit: Ancestry Trips
Three Considerations
Is 2014 the year you'll finally set aside some time and plan that return trip to your ancestral village?
If so, here are three things to consider as you plan.
1. Timing: You know that old expression, "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should?" That's how I feel about some ancestry tours.
Yes, sometimes it is possible to drive a few hours, see your ancestral town and drive back to your hotel before dinner, but it is far from ideal. When you plan your ancestry tour, don't just think about the one day you'll be in your town. Think about the overall vacation experience and plan accordingly.
2. Companions: If you are traveling with friends who don't have family ties to the area, then plan on splitting up.
Candidly discuss your goals for your ancestry trip, be sure you understand their vacation expectations and plan from there. In most cases, choosing the right base location or having "on your own time" options on hand ensures everyone has the trip they want without feeling rushed or let down.
3. Activities: Including cultural excursions such as cooking classes, wine tours, farm visits and other local experiences enhance an ancestry vacation by giving the traveler more insight into their family's past.
